Praying about Terrorism

Part of our mission is to pray for the world, and it is clear from the newspaper headlines that this prayerful work is greatly needed. Recently, we have been metaphysically addressing the problem of terrorism. Here are some of the nuggets of inspiration our members would like to share in regards to this global issue.

“I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.”

(Psalms 91:2-3)

“Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day: Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.”
(Psalms 91: 5-6)

This came to me from S&H:

“Ages pass, but this leaven of Truth is ever at work. It must destroy the entire mass of error and so be eternally glorified in man’s spiritual freedom.”
(S&H, 118)

The key for me is this: The leaven of Truth is ever at work and it must destroy the entire mass of error. Nothing can withstand divine Truth and Love.

From this week’s lesson: “Ancient and Modern Necromancy, alias Mesmerism and Hypnotism, Denounced.”

Pray to understand the difference between the evil man and the perfect man, the man at peace.

“I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree. Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found. Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.”
(Psalms 37:35–37)

“A wicked mortal is not the idea of God. He is little else than the expression of error. To suppose that sin, lust, hatred, envy, hypocrisy, revenge, have life abiding in them, is a terrible mistake.”
(S&H 289:8–11)

“Nothing is real and eternal, — nothing is Spirit, — but God and His idea. Evil has no reality. It is neither person, place, nor thing, but is simply a belief, an illusion of material sense.”
(S&H 71:1)

Here are some ideas I’ve been enjoying in working about the issue of terrorism, and gun violence…

It’s just “error” with a big “T” on it.
Does that make it more scary or a power or a force?
The “T” stands for Truth.
And Truth uncovers, eliminates, and destroys (neutralizes, “nothingizes”) error.
Error, a lie, has no power, since God is the only Power and Presence, the only Force (“May the Force be with You,” as Star Wars says), and Truth, Principle, the Law of Good ENFORCES itself. In the universe, everywhere. Now.

I have long loved the practical protection of the 91st Psalm.

And also, I’ve seen demonstrated many times, “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper.” (Isaiah 54:17)

Also, I think there is a  Bible verse about “He maketh the devices of the people come to nought,”or something like that.

During/after the Paris massacre, I was praying with [those two verses]. Interestingly, on ABC-TV news I saw a small proof of that Truth amidst the seeming chaos.

They showed a video of a single terrorist (the one they may still be looking for) who was shooting automatic weapon from street (through the window) at patrons in a crowded cafe. All scattered and hid amidst massive incoming bullets everywhere. And no one was killed. Slight hurts only. But on the street, in outdoor cafe where a woman was sitting at a table, and where the gunman was only a few feet from her, he again pointed his weapon to fire on, and most surely killed her. She had nowhere to run. His weapon jammed. He tried again. It would not fire. He then ran away. She was unharmed. (“No weapon formed against thee shall prosper”!)

Saw this proved again in a small way on streets of Chicago in a different video on the news the same week. A young woman was abducted and dragged by a man to his car. An unarmed  passerby stopped to help. He stopped his car and got out, walked back on the sidewalk to where the man held woman and pointed gun at him. The gunman then fired his gun at point blank range, wounding the would-be helper (the woman got away). The helper, a  young medical student, was hit in stomach and lay down on sidewalk. Gunman stood over him and pointed weapon to fire again. The gun jammed. He tried again. It jammed. I think he tried a third time, too… no way. So he ran away, but was caught shortly after.

“No weapon formed against thee shall prosper”!

The young med. student/hero was reported in serious condition, but reportedly doing well.

Another thing I  have prayed with is a verse I like about God’s eyes “running to and fro in all the earth” (Ezek 4:10) I have prayed with this, thinking of the searches for suspects who seem to escape and then be hidden. Mind sees only Good in operation. Truth uncovers error and brings it out of its seeming hiding places. Nothing escapes the reach and focus of Mind’s view, or of Love’s beholding of its idea that is always safely hidden in the secret place of the Most High. I like knowing that Christ is an ever-active divine influence in consciousness, and speaks to each one as voice of reason and conscience.

Finally, there is a wonderful article on JSH online yesterday (Dec. 3), “Abiding Safely in Christ”.

How do you terrorize an idea? Answer: you don’t. As we are all ideas of the infinite Mind God, there is nothing that can come between an idea and it’s source. And since we live and move in his kingdom we are spiritually clothed with the armor of his Love.

Fear, or terrorism, needs several things in order to succeed in its mission to disrupt harmony. It needs an object to fear (a terrorist), a target for the fear (an innocent, helpless mortal), a dire consequence of the fear (death, harm, anxiety, etc.), a place to hide, the intelligence to act, and the power to make its threats real. If it lacked even one of these things, fear would cease to exist because it wouldn’t be known, believed, or active.

The fact is that it doesn’t lack just one of these things, it lacks every one of these things. None of these components exist. They are fantasies. Man is the expression of Soul. In S&H it says, “Soul can never express anything inferior to Spirit”. So there is only one kind of man. God is only good, and good is omnipotent and fills all space. There is no place to hide from and no opposing power to God. Mind creates all and knows all that is real. There is no second tier power or authority and no subset of creation where it can exist. The fact of the allness of God and His creation vaporizes every one of the notions that fear and terrorism would need in order to touch us.

We invite you to work with us as we continue to pray for the world and pray to heal the world of terrorism. We find the Christian Science Monitor newspaper a very helpful source of information in his project, as it is also their mission to bless the world through honest reporting.
